Copacabana Palace, 12/01/2020 – Hommage aux employés étrangers – Ouverture du Carnaval
Dimanche 12 janvier 2020, l’hôtel Copacabana Palace a organisé une petite cérémonie pour honorer ses employés étrangers (non-brésiliens).
La directrice de l’hôtel, Madame Andrea Natal, a animé personnellement cet événement, et a trinqué (avec du vrai champagne) avec chaque employé.
Plus d’une dizaine de pays étaient représentés : l’Argentine, le Pérou, l’Uruguay, le Venezuela, Haïti, l’Angola, la France, l’Espagne, l’Allemagne, l’Italie, l’Afghanistan et le Népal.
Chaque employé a hissé le drapeau de son pays.
Devant l’hôtel, se déroulaient les festivités du lancement du Carnaval 2020, avec une foule de cariocas (habitants de Rio de Janeiro).
Chaque employé étranger avait le droit d’inviter une personne, et nous avons eu la surprise de recevoir un « pass VIP » pour cet autre événement.
Quand on vit en tant qu’étranger dans un pays, on a toujours un peu l’impression d’être « à côté », dans une sorte de monde parallèle, et de ne jamais pouvoir vraiment être intégré ou participer : cette fois-ci, ce fut tout le contraire, et ce fut réellement très appréciable.
Dans l’hôtel, j’ai eu l’occasion de traverser des salons immenses (que je n’ai pas filmés), et une galerie de portraits des « grands de ce monde » y ayant séjourné.
C’est véritablement un palais.
Et c’est beaucoup plus qu’un « simple » hôtel 5*, c’est une part de l’histoire du pays.
Dans ce petit clip, on aperçoit la piscine principale de l’hôtel, qui est la plus grande des hôtels de Copacabana, et dans laquelle la Princesse Diana a pu nager en faisant éteindre les lumières à l’aube (à cause des paparazzi), en 1991.
Depuis 1996, il existe une autre piscine sur le toit, moins grande mais réservée aux (vrais) VIPs et chefs d’Etat séjournant au dernier étage.
Elle a été utilisée par, entre autres, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, et Paul McCartney.
Cet édifice, construit en 1923 par l’architecte français Josef Gire en s’inspirant notamment du Carlton à Cannes et du Négresco à Nice, occupe un paté de maisons complet, sur 12000 m2.
Il comporte 3 restaurants, dont deux jouissent d’une étoile Michelin.
Un bref passage dans les zones réservées au personnel donne l’impression d’une « usine », dans laquelle travaillent plus de 500 personnes.
Ce n’est définitivement pas un hôtel comme les autres.
Et cette initiative étonnante et gratifiante pour les employés étrangers en est un exemple.
Ce fut un après-midi inoubliable, et nous sommes très reconnaissants envers la direction de l’hôtel.
C’est encore un bel exemple de la générosité et de la gentillesse du Brésil, qui est, pour moi, « le pays du possible » (par opposition à la France, « pays de l’impossible » pour les personnes « trop différentes »).
Au Brésil, on sait valoriser la diversité et rendre les gens heureux, en toute simplicité.

No domingo, 12 de janeiro de 2020, o Hotel Copacabana Palace organizou uma pequena cerimônia em homenagem aos seus funcionários estrangeiros (não brasileiros).
A Diretora do hotel, Sra. Andrea Natal, foi pessoalmente a anfitriã deste evento, e brindou (com champanhe verdadeiro) com cada funcionário.
Mais de dez países estiveram representados: Argentina, Peru, Uruguai, Venezuela, Haiti, Angola, França, Espanha, Alemanha, Itália, Afeganistão e Nepal.
Cada funcionário hasteou a bandeira do seu país.
Em frente ao hotel, foram realizadas as festividades de lançamento do Carnaval 2020, com uma multidão de cariocas (habitantes do Rio de Janeiro).
Cada funcionário estrangeiro tinha o direito de convidar uma pessoa e ficámos surpreendidos por receber um « passe VIP » para este outro evento.
Quando se vive como estrangeiro num país, sente-se sempre um pouco como se estivesse « ao lado », numa espécie de mundo paralelo, e nunca se consegue realmente integrar-se ou participar: desta vez foi o oposto, e foi realmente muito apreciado.
No hotel, tive a oportunidade de passar por salas imensas (que não filmei), e uma galeria de retratos dos « grandes deste mundo » que lá ficaram.
É realmente um palácio.
E é muito mais do que um « simples » hotel 5*, é uma parte da história do país.
Neste pequeno clip, você pode ver a piscina principal do hotel, que é a maior dos hotéis de Copacabana, e na qual a princesa Diana pôde nadar com as luzes apagadas ao amanhecer (por causa dos paparazzi), em 1991.
Desde 1996, existe outra piscina no telhado, menor mas reservada para VIPs (reais) e chefes de Estado hospedados no último andar.
Tem sido usada por, entre outros, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, e Paul McCartney.
Este edifício, construído em 1923 pelo arquitecto francês Josef Gire, inspirado no Carlton de Cannes e no Negresco de Nice, ocupa uma quadra completa, em 12000 m2.
Tem 3 restaurantes, dois dos quais foram premiados com uma estrela Michelin.
Um breve passeio pelas áreas do pessoal dá a impressão de uma « usina », na qual trabalham mais de 500 pessoas.
Definitivamente não é um hotel como os outros.
E esta incrível e gratificante iniciativa para funcionários estrangeiros é um exemplo disso.
Foi uma tarde inesquecível, e estamos muito gratos à gerência do hotel.
É mais um belo exemplo da generosidade e bondade do Brasil, que para mim é « o país do possível » (em oposição à França, « o país do impossível » para pessoas « demasiado diferentes »).
No Brasil, sabem valorizar a diversidade e fazer as pessoas felizes, com simplicidade.

Copacabana Palace, 12/01/2020 – Tribute to foreign employees – Opening of the Carnival
On Sunday, January 12, 2020, the Copacabana Palace Hotel organized a small ceremony to honor its foreign (non-Brazilian) employees.
The hotel manager, Ms. Andrea Natal, personally hosted this event, and toasted (with real champagne) with each employee.
More than ten countries were represented: Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Haiti, Angola, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Afghanistan and Nepal.
Each employee raised the flag of his or her country.
In front of the hotel, the festivities for the launch of Carnival 2020 were held, with a crowd of cariocas (inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro).
Each foreign employee had the right to invite one person, and we were surprised to receive a « VIP pass » for this other event.
When you live as a foreigner in a country, you always feel a bit like you are « on the side », in a kind of parallel world, and you never really get to be integrated or participate: this time it was the opposite, and it was really very much appreciated.
In the hotel, I had the opportunity to go through huge lounges (which I didn’t film), and a portrait gallery of the « greats of this world » (celebrities) who stayed there.
It is truly a palace.
And it’s much more than a « simple » 5* hotel, it’s a part of the country’s history.
In this little clip, you can see the main swimming pool of the hotel, which is the biggest of the hotels in Copacabana, and in which Princess Diana could swim when the lights were turned off at dawn (because of the paparazzi), in 1991.
Since 1996, there is another rooftop pool, smaller but reserved for (real) VIPs and heads of State staying on the top floor.
It has been used by, among others, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Paul McCartney.

It is yet another fine example of the generosity and kindness of Brazil, which is, for me, « the country of the possible » (as opposed to France, « the country of the impossible » for people who are « too much different »).
In Brazil, they know how to value diversity and make people happy, with simplicity.
